Middle School & Junior High Counselors

Some of the roles of a middle school or junior high counselor include:

  • Short-term counseling to students

  • Referrals for long-term counseling support

  • Crisis intervention and response

  • Assist students in developing good peer relationships and managing/resolving peer conflicts

  • Individual and group student academic planning and goal setting

  • Assessing student abilities, interests, and achievement to help them make decisions about their future 

  • Preventative classroom guidance activities

  • Promoting positive school climate by nurturing self-awareness, acceptance, and diversity

  • Collaboration with families, teachers, administrators, community for student success

  • Advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings

  • Data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges

  • Collaboration with Social Worker for families in crisis or Families in Transition
