More than 20 students from Don Tyson School of Innovation and Har-Ber and Springdale high schools participated in the first-ever Fine Arts Signing Day Celebration May 10, 2023, at the Marsha Jones Performing Arts Center at Har-Ber High School.
"We are so excited to have this opportunity to recognize these students for their outstanding achievements," said Damon Donnell, Springdale Public Schools Student Services director.
Karlie Johnson of Har-Ber High School said she committed to pursue a degree in music education with a choral focus at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia.
She said she was grateful the district offered the signing celebration for fine arts students.
"I'm very glad. Musicians put in as much work as athletes," Johnson said. "Musicianship is just another kind of recognition."
Johnson has taken voice and piano lessons for about 10 years and plays the bassoon, she said.
Dr. Jared Cleveland, Springdale Public Schools superintendent, spoke at the event and likened the students gifts to creating magic.
Participating students earned about $350,000 in scholarships Donnell said.
Johnson said her college education is paid in full due to the scholarships she's earned.
Students committed to pursue fine arts degrees from colleges that also include the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, and Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
