Mock Trial Champions

The School Board celebrated the Har-Ber High School Mock Trial Team, who are six-time state champions.

The team claimed victory over Fayetteville High School March 1 at the 2025 Arkansas High School Mock Trial Competition.

The team is coached by Daniel Caudle and Lauren Loehndorf, and the final round was presided over by U.S. District Judge James M. Moody Jr. and a panel of scoring judges that included Arkansas Bar Association President Kristin Pawlik, President-Elect Jamie Jones, Jonathan Ross, Lisa Peters and Adam Jackson.

This year’s competition was one of the largest in recent history, with 26 teams competing in the event.

Har-Ber High will advance to represent Arkansas at the 2025 National High School Mock Trial Championship May 7-10 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Quiz Bowl Winners

The School Board recognized the Don Tyson School of Innovation Junior Quiz Bowl team, who received first place in the 7A Northwest Regional and the 7A State competitions.

Student Roger Coridan was the Quiz Bowl MVP as the high point scorer at both Regionals and State.

Quiz Bowl is an academic competition in which teams of students compete to answer as many questions as possible on topics such as literature, history, science, art, music, mythology, religion, philosophy, social science, geography, current events and pop culture.

The DTSOI team was coached by Kelsey Davis and included seventh-graders Diego Chavez-Kono, Nathan Udouj and Henry Moody and eighth-graders Danielle Robertson, Garrett Robertson, Allie Lott, Charlie Schneider, Roger Coridan and Team Captain Quentin Clevenger.

Beating the Odds Recognitions

John Tyson and Walker elementary schools were recognized by the Office for Education Policy as 2024 Beating the Odds schools.

Beating the Odds award winners serve a population where at least 66% of students face economic challenges and are demonstrating the highest levels of academic growth.

Because achievement on state assessments is generally correlated with the percentage of students attending the school who face economic disadvantages outside of school, these “high-poverty” schools are doing critically important work by helping students move toward and beyond grade level mastery.

OEP Beating the Odds awards schools are based on the growth of elementary, middle and high school students on the ACT Aspire Math and English Language Arts assessments.

UAMS Partnership

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Institute for Community Health Innovation is partnering with the region’s Marshallese community through the 24/7 Parenting program.

24/7 Parenting is a curriculum-based program designed to enhance parenting skills and family dynamics. The program encourages parents to reflect on their upbringing and to learn important behaviors and skills that will help them be the best parents they can be.

The program features curriculum with individualized case management for a minimum of seven months and is available for fathers, mothers and couples in Northwest Arkansas. Classes are available in Marshallese, Spanish and English.

By fostering effective communication and self-awareness, the 24/7 Parenting program helps individuals become more engaged and supportive parents, fostering relationships within the family unit. Participants in the program also receive one-on-one case management from a community health worker, who works with parents to help connect them to needed resources.
