Springdale students, staff prepare for the future!
Southwest Student Named 2022 Soybean Scholar
Jenny Garcia-Torres, a Southwest Junior High School ninth grader, was named a 2022 Soybean Scholar Oct. 18 by the Soybean Science Challenge.
The Soybean Science Challenge is a program sponsored by the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board.
“The Soybean Science Challenge is an opportunity for students to learn more about the top row crop in Arkansas and about agriculture’s importance to the Arkansas economy,” said Julie Robinson, administrator of the Soybean Challenge and associate professor at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Students also learn about career opportunities available to them in the agriculture industry that aren’t on a farm but still make a big impact.”
Garcia-Torres’ recognition comes after completing six online classes and winning the Soybean Science Challenge award at the FFA State Agriscience Fair for a science project focusing on soybeans.
Garcia-Torres’s project set out to determine the best temperature to grow soybeans. She planted 10 plants at 12.8°C, 10 at 29.4°C and 10 at room temperature. All plants were given the same amount of light, water and soil.
After 14 days, results concluded a warm climate is more favorable for soybeans, as more plants germinated at warmer temperatures. Garcia-Torres and her teacher, Jonathan Roberts, won a $200 cash prize for winning the award.

Law Dogs Experience Poll Worker Training
The Springdale High School Law Dogs spent Sept. 29 learning from professionals in preparation for the Nov. 8 election!
The school’s Law and Public Safety Academy spent the morning training to be election poll workers.
“A big thank you to the executive director of the Washington County Election Commission, Jennifer Price, for teaching them the importance of voting in our democracy,” said Marjay Hignite, SHS social studies teacher. “Students also learned how the commission is integral in protecting the integrity of the voting process and how committed our poll workers are to the democratic process.”
