Four of Brittni Gunn's sixth grade science students at Sonora Middle School are working on a project that is one of 75 semi-finalists in the 11th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. Sonora Middle School will receive $15,000 to be redeemed on DonorsChoose.org as well as a Samsung Galaxy Note20 to execute its project during the current school year. The recognition come from the students' idea to impact change in their community using STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills. Their issue? A rise in outdoor water sports due to the pandemic has led to an increase in concern over carbon dioxide poisoning from the exhaust of older boats, which has resulted in hospitalizations. Their project? Develop a wearable CO2 sensor and waterproof housing that will attach to the shoulder of any life jacket that can notify of harmful levels of carbon monoxide to the wearer.
Gunn says, "This project is personal because some of our students have had family members affected by CO2 poisoning while on the lake. We are really excited about having resources to help solve this problem. We are overwhelmed by having this opportunity. It's amazing to see what these students can do. These students are from our Innovative Academy and they are using match, science, social studies and literacy to work on a meaningful project."
Next step? Gunn's students will submit a project video by March 21. Eventually 10 National Finalist schools will be selected to pitch their project to a panel of judges. Seven of those finalists will receive $65,000 in technology and classroom materials. The other three will become National Winners with a grand prize of $130,000 in classroom technology and supplies.
Students developing projects that result in community benefits are another reason Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.
Students in Susie Koch's Sonora Elementary art class were excited to open their art supply packets donated by Art Feeds and Crystal Bridges. Every student in every elementary school in the Springdale Public School District was given a tote bag from Art Feeds. Contents included markers, crayons, watercolors, a sketchbook, a glue stick, pencils and a pencil sharpener. Created by IHeartArt Supplies by Bright Stripes, 6,500 art packs were donated, courtesy of a grant from the Windgate Foundation. Crystal Bridges supplied the other 3,500 gifts. They were My Museum Classroom Kits designed to integrate artmaking with classroom curriculum. They include artmaking materials and instruction sheets for the art projects which can be paired with close looking and artmaking videos from the Art Feeds website for a richer experience.
Art Feeds Founder and CEO Meg Bourne said, "The art instructors and Springdale Schools are showing up for their students in an extremely difficult year. We're proud to be able to provide Springdale Schools and teachers with the resources and tools they need to make the weight a little lighter and prioritize mental and emotional wellness through art."
Koch added, "Our students are so excited about this. Each student has his or her own art supplies. They can take them home with them if they wish. It's important for them to see there are adults in our community who care enough about them to give them art supplies." This is another example of a partnership that helps make Springdale Public Schools #THEChoice.
Arkansas Environmental Education Association Director Sophia Stephenson visited Abigail Farrell's EAST classroom at J.O. Kelly to present a check to pay for mulch and compost for the Sara Ford Outdoor Pocket Gardens being constructed at the school. EAST students took on the project and have raised some of the necessary funds themselves. The district maintenance staff did all the concrete work and Marty Powers of the Shiloh Museum is growing plants in his greenhouse for use in the gardens. EAST students are looking for sponsors of at least seven tables that cost approximately $900 each. Students wrote the grant request to AEEA and are doing most of the work. Student projects that benefit their schools and community are among the reasons Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.

Olivia Wright, a sixth grade student at Hellstern Middle School, is the Springdale Public School District's winner of the Walmart Martin Luther King, Jr., Essay Contest. She was notified in a Zoom conference with Walmart officials. Her response? "I was very excited," she says. "My parents knew the night before but I didn't know until the Zoom. I have a passion for women's rights and the essay centered on gender equality and expectations. It was exciting to see my hard work pay off." Wright earned a gift bag, a certificate and a plaque. Hellstern was awarded $500. Passionate, creative students are among the reasons Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.
